Snider Enfield British Cavalry Carbine P61 Mark III .577 caliber, dated 1871. Serial Number 4701.

This conversion was the invention of Jacob Snider, an American from New York. This design was used by the British Army beginning in 1868 in the Ethiopian campaign and remained in service into the 1880’s.

Overall condition of the weapon is good. Barrel length is 19.25 inches long with a blued surface that has turned plumb brown. Rear sight is flip-up ladder type calibrated to 600 yds. Front has mounted blade sight. Side of barrel is stamped with numerous inspector and acceptance marks.

Lockplate is dark and is stamped forward of the hammer with a Queen’s crown over a “V” over “1871” and “ENFIELD.” Behind hammer is a Queen’s crown with “VR.”  Carbine has brass triggerguard and buttplate. Buttplate has trapdoor for cleaning rod but none is present. Triggerguard and buttplate have been lightly cleaned.

Mechanically the weapon is excellent and the bore is good but needs cleaned.

The wood stock retains its original finish and shows minor wear.

All Snider rifles and carbines are scarce.
