This is a Model 1833 Hall-North .52 caliber, breechloading percussion carbine. Top of flat receiver is stamped with a worn five-line address that reads “U. S / S. NORTH / MIDLTN / CONN. / 1839”. The breech block is released by way of a “trigger” on the underside which allowed the block to pivot upward to be loaded with a round ball. Trigger guard features two finger ridges and a large sling ring trailing off to the rear. Iron butt plate with catch at bottom to release spring loaded door to implement compartment. Compartment is empty. Carbine has a 26” round barrel with two barrel bands that secure it to the walnut stock. Bore is bright and clean. Left facet of barrel at breech stamped with “NWP” inspector’s initials. Simple v-notch rear sight with small blade sight at muzzle. Mechanically perfect. Original nipple. All metal surfaces show uniform color and wear. Dark gray / plum brown overall. Light pitting in areas exposed to the effects of firing, but overall smooth surfaces.
Stock is of black walnut and shows the typical minor dings and dents of use and age. Oval cartouche is visible on left side. Weapon retains its original ramrod / bayonet with threaded end. There is a 4” long sliver missing along the bayonet channel. Overall the stock is strong and solid exhibiting a dark patina.
A very nice, early Hall breechloading carbine. [JET]
