This scarce subtype of document served as a record of the honorable discharge of Pvt. John McCollum of Company F, 3rd Arkansas Infantry.
He enlisted on September 17th, 1861 for a term of 1 year, and his discharge is dated August 15th, 1862 and he hopefully left not a day too soon considering his actual anniversary would fall on Antietam. At the time of this document’s completion, the 3rd Arkansas was gearing up for the Maryland Campaign and maneuvering with the Army of Northern Virginia. A native of North Carolina, the document features an additional note, detailing transportation arranged to take John to Wilmington, North Carolina.
Company F were referred to as the “Hot Springs Hornets” and were commanded by Captain Daniel Newman. The 3rd would soon suffer greatly at Antietam, Gettysburg, and most major engagements of the Civil War’s Eastern Theater.
Condition is mostly good, with legible writing in appropriately oxidized ink. Small tearing is noted at the upper right edge and in a small area at center left. A small tear is also noted at the bottom edge measuring roughly 0.25”. The reverse is blank, save for a small heading along a original fold for filing purposes reading “John McCollum / discharge”. The document has been folded several times along different creases, but remains unfolded, with dimensions of 10.75” x 8.4”. The officer signature at bottom was likely signed by a clerk or adjutant, but may say Van H. Manning.
An uncommon document from a period just before the Northern Virginia and Maryland Campaigns got fully underway and certainly unique to this particular Confederate soldier. [cm][ph:L]
