The simple design of the Maynard made it easy to switch barrels. This nice-looking sporting carbine comes with both rifle and shotgun barrels, each 26-inches long and with lots of original blue, and each identically numbered 13211, matching the number on the triggerguard tang and showing they all came together originally. We measure the shotgun barrel as 20-gauge and the rifle barrel as .38 caliber. Maynard military carbines came in .35 and .50 caliber, but Flayderman remarks that the company’s sporting arms are found in various “configurations, calibers and barrel lengths.”

The frame shows muted, but visible case color and the screws show good blue with only the lockplate and lever screws showing wear to the slots. The Mass Arms Company stamp on the right frame is crisp as is the four-line Edward Maynard/ Patentee stamp with 1851 and 1859 dates on the left. The folding tang sight is in place on the wrist. Both upper and lower tangs and the buttplate show very good blue, usually the first locations to show wear from handling.

Both barrels have full coverage of thin blue with some light freckling and a few small brown spots showing. The shotgun barrel has the pin front sight in place. The rifle barrel has its V-notched rear block sight and blade front sight. The wood to metal fit is tight. The stock shows scattered small handling marks and dings. There is slight bit of chattering at the upper rear of the right butt near the buttplate, but overall the wood has very good color and edges, and the gun shows very nicely.

This is a very nice early percussion example and scarce with both barrels identically numbered to each other and the stock assembly. We include with this a modern Moose company .38 Cal. Maynard bullet mold and some empty cartridge cases.  [sr] [ph:L]
