This is the 19” Barrel .52 Caliber rimfire breechloader with brass butt plate and all other mountings are of steel. This carbine has the original front and rear sight and sling swivel at bottom of the walnut butt stock. Right side of frame marked “Sharps & Hankins Philada” with the left side of frame marked “Sharps/Patent/1859” with large Navy Inspector letters P and an J below. Serial # 5374 is sharp and strongly stamped into the receiver tang. There is a small Inspector stamp of an anchor on top of the breech. The saddle ring and bar are absent and the mounting holes were plugged’ most likely shipped to the Navy to fill their contracts. The mechanics are perfectly functional. The metal and walnut stock have usual nicks and dings and patina from use and age.
This carbine was referred to as the 11th NY Volunteer Cavalry Model, seeing they were known for using this model carbine. The 9th NY Cavalry on June 30th at Gettysburg had three Companies that were issued this model; other cavalry Regiments were also known to be issued such as the 3rd NY Cavalry, and 10th NY Cavalry Company “F”.
