Original Civil War Burnside 5th Model cavalry carbine that is in good overall original condition. Produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island, this cavalry weapon is a .54 caliber single-shot, breech-loading carbine. This arm employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cased cartridge. It features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch in the trigger guard is activated and allows for quick insertion of the cartridge. Serial number is visible on breech block and bears serial #38,746. The matching number is also visible on the frame.
Barrel exhibits a dark even patina. “Cast Steel 1864” is lightly stamped on the top of the barrel. The original rear sight is present and functions correctly. The bore has very good rifling but is dirty and looks to have some light scattered corrosion. The wood on the fore stock has several small bruises with one larger deep line on the underside by the screw. The left-hand side of the fore stock has a few worn spots indicating saddle wear.
As stated above all metal surfaces, have a dark, well used, untouched appearance. Top of the breach bears maker’s stamp “BURNSIDE PATENT / MARCH 25TH 1856” with some oxidation. The lock behind the hammer is clearly marked “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.” Mechanics are good. Hammer holds strong at half-cock and the full-cock position. Nipple is a modern replacement.
Black walnut stock is good. There is an outline of a cartouche but, it is in an area of several small dents, as a result of the carbine snap hook and the letters cannot be made out. Stock exhibits a number of shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age. The butt plate is original and appears to have been in wet conditions with some heavier corrosion. Weapon is fitted with a cavalry sling bar with original ring present. The bar itself is slightly bent out of shape. A good well used civil war cavalry carbine
According to Norm Flayderman approximately 43,000 5th Model Burnsides were produced 1863-65. [stp][ph:L]
