The Joslyn carbine was a single shot rimfire carbine and was developed parallel with the Spencer, both employed the same .52 caliber copper cartridge. The Joslyn was loaded by pivoting the breech block on a hinge, secured by a latch with a spring pull tab on the 1864 model. There is a hole in top of the breech door that acts as an air vent. Standard features include an iron contoured butt plate (stamped with “US”), iron trigger guard, single iron barrel band with accompanying band spring, two leaf hinged sight, and a saddle bar and ring on left side. Manufactured by Joslyn Fire Arms Co., Stonington, Connecticut.

On this carbine the barrel retains a dark blued patina.  All other iron parts share an even gray patina. The maker’s stamp on the lockplate reads: "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO. / STONINGTON / CONN". Breech door and breech tang are marked with serial #9806. There are two cartouches on left flat and an inspector’s initials stamped in shoulder stock in front of butt plate tang. Wood is very good with a few of the usual dings and scratches from age. Bore is dirty but with strong rifling. All mechanics are crisp and strong.

A very nice specimen of the Joslyn carbine. [jet] [ph:L]
