Between 1861 and 1864 over 20,000 percussion model carbines were produced by the Starr Arms Company - a .54 caliber with a barrel length of 21 inches, overall length of 37.65 inches.

Barrel has much of the original blue finish. “STARR ARMS MFG. YONKERS NY” stamping very strong. Inspector’s initials “H.G.S.” on side of barrel. Rifling strong and bore is bright. Breech is a bit dirty, but no major pitting is noted, aside from some corrosion of the nipple and immediate area at the top of the breech block.  Sight leaf is present and secure, as is the anchored sling ring. Mechanically perfect and parts remain tightly fitted.

Serial number “13622” is stamped on breech block – no serial stamped on this inside of the hammer. Lever, tang, and receiver, and hammer are all smooth and retain some original finish.  Some case coloring remains. Lock plate has traces of blue with nice smooth surface; marking “STARR ARMS CO / YONKERS, NY” is strong.

Walnut fore stock has minor dings, and but sharp, nice edges near screw. Rear stock has two cartouches, with typical minor dings throughout, and otherwise sharp edges with no cracks. A small sub-inspector inspector stamp (“S”) is noted on the mellow brass butt plate and matches those found on applicable parts throughout.  The barrel is stamped “F.D.L.” by inspector Frederick D. Leonard.

A nice, honest Starr Carbine for the Civil War collector.  [cm][ph:L]
