This is a transitional Joslyn carbine, being a mix of the Model 1862 and 1864 carbines. The Joslyn used an innovative pivoting breechblock system invented and patented by Massachusetts gun designer Benjamin Franklin Joslyn in 1855. The Joslyn Fire Arms Company of Stonington, Connecticut, produced 16,500 carbines by early 1865.

The Joslyn carbine fired a standard Spencer rimfire cartridge of .52 caliber (the # 56-56 cartridge). Joslyn’s unique loading arrangement consisted of a hinged breechblock that pivoted up, and to the left, allowing a cartridge to be inserted. Here, this carbine features the later “knob” latch for the breechblock which is a characteristic of the Model 1864, while the brass barrel band, trigger guard, and butt plate are characteristics of the Model 1862 Joslyn.

This weapon is in fine condition and exhibits a pleasing appearance with a fine walnut stock and attractive brass furniture. Carbine bears the serial number of “2844” on top of the breechblock and on the breechblock tang.

This carbine has a 22” long round barrel fitted to a one-piece walnut stock. The fore end of which is secured by a single brass barrel band. The barrel has inspector’s initials stamped on left side at breech. Barrel exhibits nice original tone with scattered darker mottling overall. The bore is clean with strong rifling. The top of the hinged breechblock shows patent stampings “B.F. JOSLYN’S PATENT / OCTOBER 8TH 1861 / JUNE 24TH 1862” with the vent hole drilled through the center. Two-leaf rear sight sits at the breech while at the front is a large pinched sight. Case hardened lockplate is stamped “JOSLYN FIRE ARMS Co. / STONINGTON CONN.” in front of the hammer. Mechanics are crisp and strong.

Stock is in good condition with normal dings and scratches from use and storage. The initials “AP” are carved into the stock. The carbine’s steel sling bar and sling ring are tightly attached to the left side of stock. Two government cartouches are faintly visible. Brass butt plate and trigger guard are stamped with small “L” inspector’s initial as is the iron sling ring plate on left flat. Brass furniture wears an even mellow patina.

This Joslyn carbine is an interesting “transitional” weapon featuring parts from the First and Second models of production.  [jet] [ph:L]
