An original Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine with “F” stamp on the underside wood of the fore-stock, midway between the screw and the front of the receiver. The “F” stamp is light and somewhat worn but, is still visible. The confederate used die font is unique, with long serifs, particularly on the front leg of the letter F. For more information on captured and collected Confederate arms see the book by Captain Steve W. Knott, USN (ret.) titled “CAPTURED & COLLECTED CONFEDERATE REISSUED FIREARMS” on our website. On page 72 of his book “CAPTURED & COLLECTED: CONFEDERATE REISSUED FIREARMS” author Steven W. Knott tells us “The “F” stamp likely belongs to First Lieutenant William E. Foster, supervisor of all cleaning and repair production at the Danville Arsenal. Ordered to this assignment on July 26, 1862, he directed cleaning & repair work at the satellite facility until 1864.” This mark shows that the weapon was captured or collected from a battlefield by Confederate forces and turned in for cleaning and or repair before being reissued to Confederate units.

The carbine was produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island. This cavalry model .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine is in good serviceable condition. This weapon employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cartridge. The carbine also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch of the trigger guard is activated, which allows for quick insertion of the cartridge.

All metal surfaces on this carbine wear a dark to faded grey patina. The screw heads show some usage but, all appear to have not been turned in a very long. In particular, the butt plate screw slots are filled even with debris. The barrel has original front and rear sights and is held to the forearm by a single iron band. Forward of the rear sight is a faint “CAST STEEL” stamping. Bore has light corrosion but, rifling is strong.

The breech block and frame have a matching serial number of 34452. This area is also clearly stamped “BURNSIDE PATENT / MARCH 25, 1856.” Right side of the receiver has the single guide screw which allows for smooth operation of the breech. The breach block hinge pin locking tab was bent and is now broken. It still holds in place and the action functions properly. A dark patina line is visible at the break, indicating it has been that way for a long time. A few chips in the receiver groove, just above the pin, may be a reason for the captured and collected status.

Lock plate is marked “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.” This marking is difficult to read due to darker speckled corrosion. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Original nipple is present and shows light wear. Numerous sub-inspector marks are visible on major components.

The black walnut stock is in good, original condition and has two faint cartouche marks on the left wrist area. Stock exhibits a handful of shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age. The forearm has one deeper gouge on the underside near the barrel band. The butt is solid and shows normal dings associated with a cavalry gun. Despite these imperfections the stock shows its age well.

Left side of the receiver is fitted with a sling bar and ring that is slightly bent but, shows lots of usage. Overall, a great example of a well-used civil war carbine that served with Union and Confederate forces. [stp] [ph:L]
