Barrel is semi-bright with only light, scattered surface oxidation forward of the barrel band. Front blade sight is present above the muzzle and the rear sight has flip-up leaves with original blued finish. Bore is mirror bright with good rifling.

Lock plate is bright and smooth. Under the bolster the lock is clearly marked “J. H. MERRILL BALTO PAT JULY 1858 APL 9 MAY 21-28-61” in three lines. Just forward of the hammer is a small spread-winged eagle while behind the hammer is the year “1863.” The hammer matches the lock in appearance. The breech lever has a partial stamping of “J. H. MERRILL BALTO / PAT. JULY 1858.” Further to the rear the breech lever bears serial number “14865.” Lever operates properly and upon lifting it the inspector initials of “B / B” can be seen between the rear sight and the breech.  “B” sub-inspection stampings can be seen on the breech, trigger guard, and hammer. Action works well and the original nipple remains in a good condition.

The wood stock features one inspector cartouche stamp on the left side flat opposite the lock. Wood shows a lot of the original feathering and retains its rich finish. Saddle bar and ring is mounted on the left side and with a few minor dings in the surrounding wood – conceivably from a sling swivel.

Smaller parts are numbered “4 / 61” to include the rear sight base, barrel band, trigger guard, butt plate, saddle ring bar, and the underside of the breech cover plate.

Brass butt plate is stamped with a strong “US.” All brass surfaces show a light patina.

It is known that the Merrill carbine was issued to the 1st, 5th, and 18th New York, 11th, 17th and 18th Pennsylvania, 1st New Jersey, 7th Indiana, 1st and 3rd Wisconsin, 27th Kentucky and 1st Delaware Cavalry regiments – with more finding their way into service via private purchase or smaller ordnance orders.

Overall, a very pleasing gun with few notable flaws.  Ideal for the discerning Civil War collector.  [cm][ph:L]
