Approximately 20,000 of these carbines were produced at the Springfield Arsenal from 1886 to 1889.
This carbine has a 22-inch barrel that retains 10% of its original blue with the rest being a dull mottled gray/ bluing turning plum color. Correct blade front sight while at rear is the Buffington sight that can be adjusted for elevation and windage. The top of sight is marked with a letter “C” for carbine. Sight is complete and operates well. Left side of the barrel is stamped at breech with “V. P./ eagle head / C. The bore is a little dirty and the rifling is good.
The barrel is attached to the carbine stock by a single barrel band that retains nice color case hardening. Top of band is grooved to protect the sight leaf.
Lock has a gray mottled appearance with hints of color case hardening. A” spread-winged eagle” forward of the hammer and “U. S.” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Stampings are strong and the lock fit is tight. The action functions properly. The breech tang displays excellent case colors. The trigger guard bow has bright original polished bluing. Forward portion of trigger guard sub-inspected with an “A”. Serial number on breech is 361819. Top of breech at hinge is crisply stamped “U.S. MODEL 1884.” The butt plate is marked “US” and is in good shape with a 50/50 mix of bluing/ dark grey. A little light pitting around the magazine tube recess.
The wood stock shows only light wear from age, use/ storage and presents nicely. The wood surface is very smooth. The cartouche is visible on left side opposite lock “SWP over 1889”. Underside of stock marked “P in a circle over D”. Saddle bar and ring are also mounted on the left side. The sling bar has a few small dents with little wear in the ring.
Overall, a great example of a late Indian war period cavalry carbine. [stp][ph:L]
