Here is an original Civil War ‘Burnside’ cavalry carbine specimen in excellent condition that was produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island in the last two years of the war. This cavalry model .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine was one of some 43,000 such weapons manufactured by the company during 1863 and 1864 and employed the uniquely designed, tapered, copper Burnside cartridge.

The weapon is an outstanding example of one of the veteran carbines of the war. The shoulder arm bears serial number “18974” and retains almost all the original finish - both bluing and casehardening. Lock tang shows the maker’s marks “BURNSIDE RIFLE Co. / PROVIDENCE R. I.” Lock markings are strong and clear - as are the serial numbers. Maker’s stamp “BURNSIDE’S PATENT / MODEL OF 1864” on the receiver at top of frame is strong and clear.

Barrel and receiver show most of the original bluing and case color.  No pitting is noted. Mechanics are crisp with no play in the lever. Bore is dirty but exhibits deep rifling. Front sight is secure and rear sights are complete and functional.

Stock and foregrip exhibit shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age but still enjoy much of the original ‘feathering’ effect. Left wrist sports a very strong and clear cartouche.

Barrel length is 20” with an overall length of 39.5”.

If one seeks a fine Burnside carbine, this is surely the one.  [cm] [ph:L]
