This .58 caliber Carbine is in good condition, and like most of these guns is a composite of Richmond made parts, and left-over captured Harpers Ferry parts. The carbine has the low hump Richmond lock that is marked in two horizontal lines forward of the hammer: "CS " over "RICHMOND VIRGINIA. The rear of the lock is stamped vertically with the date "1863". The lock itself is in good condition showing deep stampings but the "3" in 1863 is partially lost due to both wear and pitting. The lock remains fully functional. The exterior is mostly smooth but has areas of pitting. The hammer is original but the screw holding it is newer. The barrel is Richmond made. The mortise for the rear sight shows a crude “steady pin” cut typical of Richmond work, rather than the well machined “T” shaped cut found on a US M1855 barrels. The barrel has a faint set of "VP" and eagle head proof marks on the left angled flat at the breech, and no date is visible on the top of the breech. The rear sight appears to be Harpers Ferry work, with a US M1855 type base with a steady pin, and the swept-wing shaped elevating leaves. The long-range, 500-yard leaf is missing, but the L-shaped 100-yard to 300-yard leaf remains in place. The front sight is an example of the classic Richmond “pinched” front sight. The bore of the carbine is in fair condition.

The rear barrel band appears to be a re-used Harpers Ferry band, with a well centered “U” mark. The band is correctly positioned about 9 3/8” from the breech plug. The upper barrel band is Richmond a made band with a high offset “U” mark. The original Richmond “thin shank”, tulip head iron ramrod has been replaced with a modern but suitable one. There is some scattered light pitting across nearly all of the iron surfaces of the barrel, bands and trigger guard. The breech shows more moderate pitting around the bolster, as would be expected. All the gun's metal components were scrubbed at one time and are now bright but not overly so. The sling swivel on the trigger guard is broken off; the front swivel is in place. The swivel screwed into the butt stock is perhaps a replacement as it has a rather dark patina but is the correct type and the fact is it may be the un-scrubbed original. The brass nose cap and butt plate are Richmond made. The nose cap is held by a single screw.  he lock mortise does not have the classic “Mule’s Foot” inletting found on Richmond made gun stocks but shows the inletting for the Maynard priming mechanism and is therefore Harper's Ferry; this stock was cut and re-worked to create this carbine at the Richmond Arsenal in 1863. The stock has been lightly sanded and varnished, resulting in the edges being softened. The stock was cracked a long time ago and subsequently repaired. This is on the bottom fore stock ahead of the trigger guard; it is stable and not unsightly. The nipple on the barrel bolster is modern as is the clean-out screw. Despite its flaws this Richmond carbine, just out of a museum in Up State New York, is better than most.  [pe] [ph:L]
