Produced by the Spencer Rifle Company of Boston, Massachusetts, this Model 1860 Spencer breechloading repeating carbine is in good original condition. The carbine, which fired the .52 caliber, “No. 56” Spencer rimfire cartridge, has a 22” long barrel and a two-piece black walnut stock.
Barrel wears a nice pewter/light tan tone. Has the large folding rear sight without slide and the “blade” front sight. Receiver, hammer and lockplate of matching color. Bore is clean and clear with strong rifling. Top flat of the receiver, forward of the hammer, is stamped with “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS / PAT’D. MARCH 6, 1860”. Serial #48756 is located at the top rear of the receiver near the hammer. Small “M” sub-inspector’s stamps on some parts.
Original sling bar minus the ring is tightly secured to the left side of stock. Retains the single swivel near the stock toe. Original magazine tube and spring. All mechanics are crisp and strong.
Wood is original with light wear. Two inspector cartouches visible.
Most of gun has had a coat of clear finish applied, giving a somewhat shiny appearance; typical of some early collections. And this was recently acquired from just such a collection: the “Old Stone House Museum” in Windsor, NY.
A classic original Civil War M1860 Spencer carbine showing honest use. [jet][ph:L]
