This handsome weapon is a Model 1860 Spencer Army Repeating Carbine that was altered post-war at the National Armory at Springfield, Mass. Civil War Spencer repeating arms became the primary US cavalry shoulder arm late in the civil war and just after in the early Indian war period. As they became unserviceable, both carbines and rifles were returned to Springfield for ‘refurbishing’ or ‘alteration’. The process bored out the old .52 caliber barrel and inserted a reinforced rifle sleeve in the new .50 caliber (.56-50). These ‘reinforced’ Spencer weapons produced higher velocity and greater accuracy for the troops. Ordnance Department records indicate that some 12,000 Spencer Army rifles were altered at the Springfield facility between 1866 and 1874. They all shared common characteristics as found in this fine excellent condition Spencer carbine specimen. This arm shows very good color case hardening throughout and approximately 90% of the arsenal bluing on the barrel. Also, wearing considerable color hardening on the butt plate and loading tube. The armory licensed ‘Stabler’ cutoff device has been installed forward of the trigger. Top plate of the receiver frame exhibits the original makers address of “SPENCER REPEATING/ RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS/ PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860” with some thinning in the center line. Serial number 26939 stamped on top of the wrist frame, indicating an original civil war period production date of the first half of 1864.

The barrel is three wide bands and groove rifling. Almost mint bore. Rear iron swivel and side sling bar/ring are in place. The sling bar shows a little period usage with a slight bend. Action is very tight, as well as good spring on the hammer and tumbler lock-up. Assembly number “269” stamped on breech block. Nice case colors as well. Included with the carbine is a center fire .56-50 conversion breech block.

Black walnut stock, as well as the forearm, has been armory refinished with only a few minor handling marks. One cartouche of “TJS” visible on the left side stock at the wrist for armory sub-inspector Thomas J. Shepard. One characteristic of an altered Spencer shows the hammer and frame to have rounded edges to facilitate insertion of the single cartridge, when the cut-off device is used. Barrel retains the original folding rear sight graduated to 800 yards and the blade front sight has the original white metal insert at the muzzle. A very fine, good looking Springfield Armory altered Spencer Repeating Carbine with the Stabler cutoff device. The arm possibly seeing service in both Civil and Indian wars.     [stp][ph:L]
