This is an original heavy wood ammunition crate. This measures approximately 17” x 13” x 7”. There are handles on the ends but no lid. Dovetail joints. Wood shows moderate to heavy wear and use.
Painted olive drab on exterior surfaces. The ends are stenciled in white paint, “1000 MUSKT / BUCK & BALL / PERCUSSION”.
The “percussion” designation relates to the size of the powder charge. Prior to, and early in the war when flintlock weapons were still in service, ammunition was being made for both types of weapons. Flintlock cartridges had a larger powder charge as a specified amount was used for “priming the pan”.
A hard item to find as most were used for fire wood. [jet]
