The Lee “straight-pull” rifle was adopted by the US Navy and US Marine Corps starting in 1895 to keep up with the trend of smaller caliber, high velocity cartridges using smokeless powder. The marines received their first issue of the new rifle in 1897 and it saw action throughout the Spanish American War, Philippine Insurrection, Moro Rebellion, Boxer Rebellion and the numerous “little wars” of the period. They are perhaps best known, however, from the 54 rifles salvaged from the sunken battleship Maine that made their way into Francis Bannerman’s hands for sale in his catalogs.

Here’s a good example of the issue front sight cover for the 6mm Lee with smooth metal overall showing minor age spotting and about 50 percent thin blue coverage.    [sr] [ph:L]
