SHENANDOAH POWDER HORN AND BAG

$350.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 846-357

Powder horn meas. approx.  13.00 inches long. The base has a wooden plug held in place by small iron tacks. The lower portion of the horn is covered with a tightly wrapped string or cord. It is wrapped so tight that it looks like a piece of cloth. The neck of the horn has a black leather collar with an attached pocket that holds a homemade wooden powder measurer approx. 3.25 inches long. The spout holds a hand carved wooden plug.

Attached to the horn is a heavy woven canvas sling approx. 1.50 inches wide. One end is nailed to the base plug of the horn while the other is attached to the leather collar by a piece of leather that was looped around the spout. At some point this broke and a replacement strip of leather was sewn to the sling and then to the collar on the horn.

The shot bag is made entirely of leather. Closed, the bag meas. approx. 9.00 x 7.00 inches and has a sling made of two pieces of leather approx. 1.00 inch wide and 20.00inches long. These strips are sewn to the bag at one end and sewn together at the top forming the sling. The bag opens by simply lifting the flap to expose the inner pocket.

Both pieces show age. They have a uniform dark patina with slight to moderate surface dirt. The bag is in very good condition while the horn just has the one repair to the sling mentioned above.

A nice-looking set. [AD] [ph:m]
