An open package for .44 caliber paper cartridges in good condition with five of the original bullets inside. “Expressly For Colt’s Patent Revolving Holster Pistol.” This is the pasteboard box that was covered with a pre-printed label and then varnished to make it weatherproof. This specimen has been neatly cut open around the front edge. No complete cartridges remain, only five pistol bullets with a small bit of cartridge paper on each. Box has clean front label and will still display very nicely.
These cartridges were made by H.W. Mason of South Coventry, Connecticut who was in business from 1865 to 1888. Mason found a business opportunity in continuing to supply combustible cartridges to people who retained their old “cap and ball” weapons in a time when the arms industry was turning to metallic cartridge guns.
