"Seamless" skin cartridges were made by D.C. Sage under the Hotchkiss patent of 1862. Mutton or hog's intestine was spirally wound around a former so that the seams crossed perpendicular to each other in order to form a waterproof and seamless cartridge case.
Here is a “dug” .36 caliber Sage pistol bullet and a complete “non-dug” cartridge. The bullet cast by Sage has a pointy nose, solid base, one groove and usually a knife cut from where the cartridge material was trimmed. Excavated bullet has nice white patina. Cartridge has had cracks repaired with white glue which does not detract. Original thread remains and bullet in cartridge is clean.
A nice cartridge and bullet display set as made by D.C. Sage of Middletown, CT. [jet] [ph:L]
