This is one of several patterns of tompion issued with the various types of the Springfield Rifle Musket and illustrated in the US 1863 Rifle Musket Description and Rules. They come in a couple of different lengths and both hard and softer woods, but follow the standard form in having a knob top and slotted body that can be compressed for insertion into the muzzle to keep out dampness and dirt. See Gun Tools by Shaffer, Rutledge, and Dorsey for details on the different patterns.
This is in very good condition and would help complete a display of arms as issued to the Civil War infantryman. Exc. condition. [sr] [ph:m]
