The mainspring vise was an essential tool for the soldier, enabling him to compress the spring powering the lock of his musket or rifle so that the lock could be disassembled for cleaning or repair. Needless to say, sergeants were probably supervising things closely and keeping these out of the hands of the idle, the curious, and the aspiring amateur gunsmiths in the company.
This would fill out nicely a display of the gear and tools issued to accompany the soldier’s weapons. Exc. condition. [sr] [ph:m]
