These blackened iron take-down tools combine two screwdriver blades, all that is required to disassemble a Spencer rifle or carbine. They were supplied with the guns as part of the army and navy contracts and would be carried in the implement pocket on the front face of the cartridge box. These show up in two sizes. Some had thought the smaller were for the carbine and the larger for the rifle, which does not make a lot of sense. SR&D, however, regard this longer type as the wartime tool for both rifles and carbines, with the shorter ones being postwar conversions of musket tools for use with the Indian War altered M1860 and M1865 Spencer carbines. The pattern in general is similar to later Remington tools, but the Spencers have a more rounded top. Confirmation of the type as a Spencer tool was provided by one like this in a cased presentation rifle given by the company to its chief officer, Frank Cheney.

This is scarce, original Civil War Spencer tool that would complement either a Spencer rifle or carbine. [sr] [ph:L]
