This is a scarce cartridge. The bullet in this cartridge is the third pattern, or enlarged Colt bullet made at the Richmond Laboratory.
The First Pattern bullet was the typical Colt bullet with a rebated base. The Second Pattern was a very pointy bullet with a single deep groove. The diameter of these proved to be too small and the Third Pattern arose when the Second Pattern bullet molds were milled out to make a larger diameter bullet. These bullets feature the bulbous top you see in this cartridge.
This is a very scarce Confederate cartridge, made in Richmond. The cartridge remains in excellent condition. [jet] [ph:L]
