This powder flask was certainly made for the American market. The bottom is fitted with two small, round hinged covers for interior compartments, each with an eagle with raised wings, a U.S. shield on its chest and clutching arrows and an olive branch. The body itself is oval in cross-section and decorated in slightly Gothic fashion with lengthwise channels with rounded tops and containing a row of raised dots, alternating with channels given arched tops and containing a smooth column in relief with a pointed top imitating the arch of the channel. Thumbpiece and spring are in place. The top of the spout has a raised knurled edge.

The condition is very good with a nice patina. Collar, spout and base have a muted brass tone. The body shows darker in recesses with a matching muted brass tone to raised areas from handling. There are just a few minor dings. One screw on the bottom shows a little wear in the slot.

This is clearly for a cased set, likely for a pair of Philadelphia deringers.  [sr] [ph:m]
