This is a Model 1959 Type I bayonet with matching numbered scabbard, rubber insulator, leather hand strap, and full leather frog. The AKM rifle was introduced in 1960 as a replacement for the original AK-47.

Bayonet is 11" long overall with a 6" stainless steel blade which made the bayonet impervious to rust. The unfullered clip-point blade has sawteeth along the spine. Two-piece bakelite grip. A thin leather hand strap connects at the pommel and the cross guard for extra grip when used as a combat knife.

The steel scabbard body had a lug at the point that engaged a hole in the blade, so that bayonet and scabbard could be combined as a wirecutter. A rubber insulator is mounted on the scabbard making it safe to cut electrified wire.

Bayonet and scabbard have matching production numbers, "ACV 0195".

Leather frog is "buttoned" around the scabbard and forms a sturdy belt loop. Blade, scabbard, and frog remain in very good condition. Bakelite grips show wear with moderate dings.

The AKM Type I bayonet was produced by East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Russia. [jet] [ph:L]
