Item Code: 775-03

This heavy wood crate was for Civil War artillery shells. It remains in good original condition. It measures approximately 20” (plus handles) x 13” x 10” with mortised corners. No lid.

Both original rope handles remain on the end handles. The exterior was painted red while the interior remains natural wood color. Both ends are stenciled, “8 ROUNDS / WITH SABOT / 12 PDR GUN / SPH, CASE / 1864”.

Front of crate bears original stencil, “NO FUZE” over very faint “WATERVLIET / ARSENAL”.

Wood remains strong with no rot.

This is a nicely marked artillery shell crate.   [jet] [ph:L]
