This powder horn uses a flat base plug secured to the body with brass tacks and mounts a simple brass finial for a strap or cord. The body is solid, with no cracks or wormholes and shows as a yellowish cream color from the base to within an inch or two from the spout, where it shades into brown. The spout is simply carved and facetted, and nicely follows the overall curve of the horn. A simple plug stopper is with it, fashioned as a long, narrow peg with a wide top pierced by a hole for the string that secures it to the neck of the horn below the throat. Overall measures approx. 10 ½”.
This would display well with an early Virginia sporting muzzleloader, many of which, along with surplus military arms, saw service around the farm for years after cartridge arms were available on the market. [sr] [ph:L]
