This rifle tompion is in very good condition. Tompions were placed in the muzzle of a weapon to keep dirt and moisture out of the barrel. Constructed of brass with cork and wool, this was for the .58 caliber rifled muskets of the era. “Patented Nov. 24, 1863” is clearly marked on the top disk. A small portion of the wool covering is missing.
Overall very nice example of the most desirable of the Civil War period patent tompions. [ld] [ph:L]
