Offered here is a “regulation” paper cartridge for the Model 1842, .69 caliber muskets that had been rifled after the fact.
The paper cartridge contains a large caliber 3-groove minie ball and powder charge. The “regulation” cartridge is tied with string above the bullet and the other end closed with a series of folds to create the tail.
This specimen is in good condition with a repaired crack on the bottom and some paper discoloration where the black powder is located. Due to the weight of the large bullet, most of these cartridges that have survived exhibit numerous cracks and tears to the cartridge paper. This example remains strong and very displayable.
