Brass powder flask in good condition. The body has one small ding at bottom with a small seam opening. The decoration on the flask consists of a spread-winged eagle above a circle of 20 five-pointed stars. In the center of the circle are a pair of shaking hands within a sunburst. Below the circle of stars is a US shield at the center of a panoply of flags with crossed cannons and a Corinthian helmet. This design is found on both sides of the flask.
The adjustable brass spout and cap are also in good condition. The spout can still be adjusted to one of three settings and the cap can still be unscrewed. Spout is a bit stiff. The top of the cap is stamped with a maker’s mark and date that reads “BATTY-1849.” On the side of the cap is a small lever for opening the horn to dispense powder into the spout or measurer. Lever still works but the spring is weak.
Attached to each side of the flask just below the neck are two triangular sling keepers.
This is a nice example of a Mexican War era powder flask. [ad] [ph:L]
