These cleverly designed, forged iron musket tools were fabricated at Richmond. See Davies, “CS Armory Richmond,” for photographs of several examples. They combine a double-ended screwdriver blade that pivots on a rivet so as to also act as the T-handle grip for an extended nipple wrench, which would fit over the square base of the nipple taking the percussion cap. The T-grip would give the soldier greater torque in unscrewing and replacing a battered or damaged nipple from the musket or rifle vent, which could be a life-saving factor in battle. This has a dark, crusty iron surface and may be an early battlefield or camp pickup. The wrench portion measures 3 7/8 inches tall. The tips of the screwdriver blade have fractured and are missing, but it is a scarce example of a key Confederate gun tool carried in the field.    [sr][ph:L]
