"Seamless" skin cartridges were made by D.C. Sage under the Hotchkiss patent of 1862. Mutton or hog's intestine was spirally wound around a former so that the seams crossed perpendicular to each other in order to form a waterproof and seamless cartridge case.
Here is a very nice .36 caliber Sage pistol cartridge. The bullet cast by Sage has a pointy nose, solid base, one groove and usually a knife cut from where the cartridge material was trimmed. Cartridge remains solid and strong with no splits (unusual for this case material).
A very nice cartridge specimen as made by D.C. Sage of Middletown, CT.
