This style of cartridge was originally made prior to the Civil War and eventually replaced in the North by the “New Model” linen cartridges. However, the simple method of just tying the plain paper cartridge case to the base of the bullet with string meant these continued to be made in the Confederacy. This old style was often called the “ringtail” because of the extra band on the bottom of the bullet.

The lead bullet has several raised bands with the paper cartridge tied to the bottom. The powder tube is closed with the usual folds. When loaded into a Sharps carbine or rifle, the back end would be sheared off when the breech was closed thus exposing the gun powder to the percussion cap.

This is an excellent example of the small caliber “Sporting Rifle” cartridge.
