Perfect example of a hard-to-find cartridge. This fine specimen is still encased in its protective outer wrapper, with orange label, and brown cloth pull tab.

Many English revolvers from Adams, Kerr, and Tranter were imported into the Confederacy. Many cartridges for these guns were supplied by Eley Brothers of London. Eley manufactured “skin cartridges” where the powder case was made of mutton’s intestine and usually wrapped with thread for strength.

The skin cartridge here remains inside its protective paper wrapper. This paper envelope features a cloth “tear strip” that was used to expose the cartridge. On the bottom of the paper envelope is a round orange label, “ELEY / LONDON”.  These would have then been packaged in round tins for shipment.

Measures: D 0.425”  L 1.51".   Condition is excellent.

Reference: “Round Ball to Rimfire” Part Four, pages 174-178.  [jet] [ph:jet]
