This is a scarce and unusual Federal arsenal item. It being the base plug used to form conical cavities in a minie ball gang mold.
Springfield and Harpers Ferry made a limited number of brass multi-cavity bullet molds to cast the “new” .58 caliber rifled musket bullets. The brass four-cavity molds used this type of “fork”, fitted into the bottom of the mold to form the cavities. The bullets were nose cast.
This piece features four prongs (to form cavities) mounted on a crossbar that is mounted on a turned wood handle.
This is the “fork” piece only, there is no accompanying bullet mold. In perfect condition, and perfect for you if you have the mold! [jet] [ph:L]
