.50 caliber cartridge for Smith carbine. The same bullet was used for Smith and Gallager cartridges made under this patent. Only the dimensions of the cartridges were different.

Manufactured under Thomas Poultney’s patent.  The patent (#40,988 dated December 15, 1863) was originally granted to Thomas Rodman and Silas Crispin who assigned it to Poultney.  The cases were made of brass foil and paper with a perforation in the base.

This is shaped to fit into the receiver of the Smith carbine.  Very good condition.
