Non-dug .52 caliber Spencer cartridge. Solid bullet with two grooves crimped into a copper rimfire case.  Variations are found in the groove patterns since there were at least five companies making these cartridges.

These were completely self-contained rimfire cartridges: bullet, powder, case, and primer in one piece.

Made under Smith and Wesson’s patent (#27,933 dated April 17, 1860), the cases went through at least eight steps in the forming process.  Fulminate was then “spun” into the recesses of the rim, the powder charge was inserted, and a bullet was crimped in place.  No headstamp.

Perfect to display with Spencer carbine or rifle. [jet] [ph:jet]
