This powder flask likely came in a cased set, but was small enough to carry in a pocket and apparently was for the owner lightly scratched his initials, “JWH” on the side of the brass top. The thumb-latch, spring, and adjustable spout are in place. The body is a narrow, bag shape, embossed on two sides with an oval, foliate bordered panel showing alternating, vertical rows of raised stars and circled dots or suns. Both body and top have have a light brass color with a few age stains in the recesses of the border design, and a few on the sides of the top. The small screws around the base of the top show some blue. The spring shows as a muted blue with some spots of brown rust coming up, which shows on the spring screw as well. The seam is generally good, but has parted slightly on one lower edge, showing as a darker line more than a gap.
Flasks are great accessories, showing a multitude of decorative motifs. Given that the owner put his initials on this one, he was likely carrying it about, interested in its function as well as form. [sr][ph:L]
