This tompion has a cork body with a brass cap and base. Cork has a shallow, minor crack on one side. The brass cap and base have a medium patina.
A tompion was used by placing it in the muzzle of a musket or rifle to keep moisture and dampness out.
The brass cap and base show that this tampion is meant for use with the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle. [ld] [ph:L]
