This is a York County style powder horn made with a screw tip that is now missing, but with the upper portion of the spout clearly showing remnants of the threads that secured it. The form is characteristically York County, with two parallel incised lines running around the bottom edge of the horn body that mirror the lathe-turning of the convex base plug, which has a deeply incised line just below it and follows with a curved step surmounted by a raised ring that is chipcarved to imitate a rope border, followed by a series of paired incised lines around a convex step up to a top circular platform mounting an iron staple for the strap. The second staple is mounted just below the upper spout, which shows an incised ring and a few raised pieces that are the remains of the threading that secured a turned tip with plug that would have been threaded to screw into place. This is often thought to have been to provide a large hole for filling and even to have been useful as a small funnel if reversed, but more recent theory has it that it enabled specialization within the shop and speeded production with different workers concentrating on shaping the body of the horn, turning the plug, turning and threading the tip, followed by assembly and finishing work. This nicely dovetails with hunting by a great portion of the population rather than its restricted practice in Europe where it was the province of the nobility, whose powderhorns consequently were also far more elaborate and decoratively ornamented. This shows some chipping to the lower edge of the horn along its overlap with the base plug with a small chip and short hairline on the rounded convex step to the upper portion of the base plug. The horn shows a cream color mixed with light brown lower down and darker brown around the spout, with some blurring of the colors in between, likely from rubbing against the body of the wearer.  [sr][ph:m/L]
