JAMES DIXON & SONS STARS AND DOTS SMALL SIZE POWDER FLASK

$475.00 SOLD

Item Code: 490-6976

With a body measuring just three inches, this bag-shaped flask is the smallest of six variations on the pattern recorded by Riling as made by James Dixon and Sons of Sheffield. This would be correct for a small sized revolver or pocket pistol and is one of the two variations of the pattern made by Dixon noted by Riling as being unmarked, listed as his #391. The pattern consists of small, raised stars and circles with dots in the middle, the density of the motifs giving the impression of embroidery.

The flask has no dings, dents, or open seams. The spout, thumb ring and spring are in place. The body retains much of its original brown lacquer and the brass cap and spout have a mellow, aged patina, though both show darker age stains. The spring shows blue on the exterior, but the top edge and interior show corrosion, as does the top of thumb latch and the upper sides of the body, which have a thin, crusty dark brown just below the collar. Nevertheless, this is a fine, delicate pattern.    [sr][ph:L]
