This a small size York County powder horn was does not show any mounts for a cord and was likely carried in a hunting bag or ball pouch. It omits the usual fine incised lines around the bottom of the horn body, but has a very nicely turned spout mirroring a typically York County turned base plug. The latter was lathe turned to produce a ridge bordered by two narrow, deep channels, with another narrow channel just above producing the effect of a central raised ridge bordered by two narrow ones. The plug then curves up to another, more prominent ridge that was then chip carved to produce a rope or twisted ribbon circling the base of the horn. Inside this, the turner created more narrow channels, first on a downward curve and then up to a rounded step with raised rim on that, inside which is a concave recess with a final series of small turned channels. The turning of the spout is well done also, with a simple incised line on the body, which narrows and then flares, turned to produce a wide rounded ridge bordered by two narrow ones, much like the upper end of the base plug. There is a small wood plug in place in the spout.

The condition is very good. The spout is a light brown, matching the upper portion of the horn body, which shades into a cream color on the lower body, though there are a few scratches and rubs shading more into a gray at the midpoint. The quality and condition of the turned spout and base plug is quite good. We notice a small spot at the center middle of the base plug, in the lowest portion of the recess, which might have marked the spot for a tack or ring for a cord, but is more likely simply a fault in the wood. It is only noticeable dead-on however. The surface and color of the base plug, like the turning, is excellent.  [sr][ph:m]
