This was an essential military gun tool during the flintlock era: a wire pick for clearing the vent hole of the musket and small horsehair brush for cleaning out the priming pan. Overall length is about 7 ½ inches: A small S-hook connects with a 2 ¾ inch length or small-linked chain holding a larger omega shaped link from which hang two 2 ½ inch chains, one holding a simple 3 inch brass wire pick and the other a 2 ¼ inch brush with brass top cap. The condition is excellent. Hook and chains are complete, brush is all there, the top cap of the brush has a nice, aged tone. Signs of these are sometimes evident in a small hole near the lower edge of some early cartridge box slings, positioned about mid-chest chest level for the hook suspending these. Something so simple is tough to date, but a point between the Revolution and the 1820s would not be far off. Bannerman had some for sale that used solid links for the chains that we presume could be a slightly later pattern since flintlocks were used through the Mexican War, but of course all flintlock musket armed forces- federal, state, and volunteer militia companies would have needed these in all periods.  [sr] [ph:L]
