Offered here is a broken pack for .36 caliber Savage cartridges as made by Robert Chadwick’s Hartford Cartridge Works in Connecticut. Chadwick made ammunition for many different gun makers.
Originally this piece consisted of a wood block with six drilled holes and was wrapped with a printed paper label. This drilled wood block design was used throughout the Civil War as one of the best ways to transport fragile ammunition. This package has broken half way through the fifth hole, with approximately 0.75” missing on the right side. The remaining portion is sturdy and in good condition with most of the printed label left very readable.
Wood block is empty but comes with a single Savage bullet from the pack, which still has remnants of cartridge paper attached.
See Fig. 13 on page 5 of “Percussion Ammunition Packets” by Malloy, Thomas, & White. This makes a fine display for an ammunition collector or to go with your Savage revolver. [jet][ph:L]
