This is an original English-made Enfield cartridge for the .577 caliber Enfield rifle. Made by the firm of E. & A. Ludlow Brothers in Birmingham England and imported into the Confederacy through the Union blockade.
These cartridges contain a lead Enfield bullet having a plug cavity with a boxwood plug inserted. Bullets made by Ludlow are well known to collectors because they have either a raised “L”, “L1”, or “L2” die stamped into the top pf the cavity.
The cartridge is made of English “white fine” paper with the bullet end lubricated and with green tape with Ludlow’s name and address applied to tail end. Some minor loss of paper at the lower end of the cartridge where a small portion of the label is also missing. The cartridge is otherwise in solid condition. The label read, “E. & A. LUDLOW / BIRMINGHAM”.
A Confederate-imported cartridge from a rarely encountered English maker. [jet][ph:L]
