This is a nice, untouched example of the Batty “Peace Flask” with a great un-messed with patina, good seams, good definition to the raised motifs with just a slight push at lower center of either side on the US marked shield at the center of the trophy of the panoply of arms. The thumbpiece and spring are missing, but the adjustable spout and carrying rings are in place. The top is crisply marked “BATTY / SPRINGFIELD” on one side and “1858” on the other. The body preserves a deep copper tone with scattered dark age spots, mostly in recesses. The brass collar and spout are similarly untouched, with an aged patina and some spotting. Both show some thin verdigris in places.

Robert Dingee had produced powder flasks for riflemen starting in 1832 and in 1837 Ames had taken over production, introducing a few improvements and changing the embossed motifs to the American eagle at top, the panoply of arms at bottom and the oval with a pair of clasped hands that likely symbolized fidelity, but gave rise to the nickname of “Peace Flask” among collectors, however contradictory that might sound for a rifleman’s powder flask. Batty produced this version from 1847 to 1858, by which time the 1855 series of arms was in production, older arms were being upgraded, and fixed cartridges with the new Minie ball had become the standard, though there was apparently some residual demand from militia groups who may have preferred traditional accoutrements and retained older arms. This would go well with an 1817 Common Rifle, Hall, even a Mississippi, or in an accoutrement or specifically powder flask display.  [sr][ph:L]
