Iron, two cavity bullet mold for the .44 caliber Colt Army revolver.
It casts one round ball and one elongated bullet. Sprue cutter is attached to the top at the hinge pin and is clearly marked "COLT'S / PATENT". Cavities remain clean. There are small patches of light surface rust scattered overall with small dings associated with knocking the bullets out of the mold. Stamped “44 H” and with “A.H.K.” on one side of mold block, which are the mark of US arsenal civilian contract sub-inspector Albert H. Kirkman. According to references, Kirkman worked from 1862 to 1865.
Overall, this is a good example of the rarer, martially marked .44 Colt Model 1860 “Army” bullet mold. [jet][ph:L]
