This brass scissor mold is made to cast nine small shot, eight larger shot, and a single ball of about 56 caliber indicating intended use in a smoothbore musket, fowler or hunting weapon, which are often overlapping categories in early American firearms when dealing with colonial militia. There were certainly wood handles originally wedged over the brass extensions of the mold. The mold is in good condition with only minor ages stains, handling marks, etc.
The exterior shows a clear marking on the side of “IM” for Josiah Miller. In the 18th Century “I” was used for the written “J”. Josiah Miller was from Connecticut and he made moulds from approximately 1760-1775. [SR/jet][ph:L]
